Celtic have another Christopher Jullien problem to worry about

Celtic made further additions to their squad by bringing in Aaron Mooy on a free transfer and Moritz Jenz on a season-long loan from Lorient with an option to buy included in the deal. While neither is a blockbuster signing, they could prove to be smart additions to Ange Postecoglou’s side. On the other hand, their arrival might lead to some others heading in the opposite direction.

It was already looking likely that Christopher Jullien would be making a move away from Celtic this summer. And the club signing Jenz might have made that even more likely now.

Having been out of the team for the entirety of 2021 with a long-term injury, Jullien has struggled for game time,  even though he was available to play over the last several months of the 21/22 campaign. He has featured in pre-season matches but has not been the most impressive.

Jullien looked sure to be away a couple of weeks back, but a move to Schalke failed to materialise. The Frenchman appears to be behind Cameron Carter-Vickers, Carl Starfelt, Stephen Welsh and Jenz in the pecking order now though, and as a result, a move away might be the best step possible.

It might be time for Jullien to leave Celtic

Jullien’s place in the 25-man Champions League squad for Celtic could also be under question, especially if a further signing was made from anywhere other than a Scottish club.

In the Champions League, a squad of 25 players is there, but 8 of those must be “locally trained”. Someone like Jullien would not fall into the latter category, thus he has to make one of the remaining 17.
