Celtic could manage only a 2-2 draw against Blackburn Rovers in their pre-season friendly although there was a lot to be happy about in their performance, especially the display in the first-half. At the same time though, the Hoops need to more careful at the back and not give away goals. Otherwise, they could be in trouble in the Champions League when they come up against top level opposition.
One player who was completely missing from the squad in the game against Blackburn Rovers was Giorgos Giakoumakis. It raised a lot of eyebrows.
Giakoumakis had featured for the Hoops just a few days ago and no news had emerged about him suffering an injury either. Thus, fans wondered why he did not play on the day and there were a number of concerns as well, as the Greek striker does not have a great fitness record since arriving at Parkhead.
As it turns out, it is nothing to be worried about, and in fact, good news for Giakoumakis and his family. As reported by the Daily Record, Ange Postecoglou said:
“Gio has taken a couple of personal days because his missus is due to have a baby. But we sent a personal trainer with him so he’s not getting away with it!”
Celtic star’s mystery absence against Blackburn Rovers explained
First things first, we would like to congratulate the Giorgos and his family and hope that everything goes well.
Giakoumakis might not have had a great start to his Celtic career but he has certainly become one of their most important players since the turn of the year. It is hard to pick a starter between Kyogo and him at this point of time, and Postecoglou might have to find a way to play them both together if they continue to perform at this level.
At the same time though, the club could need to bring in another option up front as cover, if Albian Ajeti ends up departing Parkhead this summer.
