Celtic have a few positions in their squad where they might need to strengthen. One of those appears to be centre-back. The club pulled off a major coup by signing Cameron Carter-Vickers from Tottenham Hotspur on a permanent basis, after his successful loan spell last season. At the same time though, the Hoops might need to bring in more reinforcements in the heart of defence.
Christopher Jullien has been linked with a move away from the club, after he featured just one time last season under the management of Ange Postecoglou, that too as a substitute. The Frenchman has had his struggles with injuries as well and spent the entirety of 2021 out on the sidelines.
Thus, while a change of scenery could benefit Jullien, Stephen Welsh does not look ready yet to be a regular starter for the club, in case either Carter-Vickers or Carl Starfelt ended up getting injured.
So, it would make sense for Celtic to go after a centre-back this summer and one player that they had been linked with recently is Manchester City’s Taylor Harwood-Bellis. But now, the Hoops have suffered a blow in that chase.
Celtic suffer blow in transfer chase for Manchester City defender
The youngster is one of the most highly-rated young defenders in the game right now but with chances expected to be limited at Manchester City, a loan move away makes a lot of sense.
Harwood-Bellis has already had positive spells away on loan at Blackburn Rovers, Stoke City and Anderlecht. At 20 years of age, this is an important stage of his development as a footballer, and he needs to continue playing regular minutes. Thus, a move to Burnley, who got relegated to the Championship recently, could be a good step for the player. It is bad news for Celtic though, who were believed to have had their eyes on him.
