Celtic’s biggest worry throughout the course of the 2021/22 season was the sheer number of injuries that the players suffered. The squad was particularly thin in the first half of the campaign, which meant that some first-team stars had to play a lot of football and perhaps understandably, some of them found it difficult to remain fit. Things improved a lot since the turn of the year, following the additions that the Hoops made in January.
With the season now over, and a Premiership and League Cup double secured, fans would have been hoping to throw their feet up and relax.
They have been handed another injury worry though as a Celtic first-team star was forced off the pitch with an injury while on international duty.
The player in question is Carl Starfelt, who was representing the Swedish national team. He was substituted off with an injury just before half-time in their game against Slovenia. It remains to be seen how serious the problem is for the defender. Hopefully, it won’t be anything major and he will be able to return to action for the Hoops in pre-season.
Celtic first-team star suffers injury while away on international duty
Starfelt suffering an injury is not a headache that Celtic needed at this point of time. He has been one of the key players in the club’s title-winning campaign, forming a brilliant partnership in the heart of defence with Cameron Carter-Vickers.
The future of his defensive partner is up in the air at the moment, as he was only on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur. And while there have been positive noises regarding a potential permanent switch to Celtic this summer, nothing is set in stone yet and it remains to be seen how things turn out.
Thus, as things stand, there is a possibility that Celtic could be without their two first-choice centre-backs at the start of pre-season. One can only hope that that is not the case and both are available.
