Celtic go into the game against Dundee United knowing that even a draw will crown them the champions of Scotland. Not many would have been able to predict that at the start of the season, when the Hoops lost three of their first six league games. Many fans and pundits alike had written off Ange Postecoglou’s chances already and some even claimed that the club could struggle to finish second.
Less than a year on, the former Australia national team manager is on the verge of sealing a double in his first season in Scottish football.
Mathematically, the Rangers could still find a way to win the title from here, but realistically, it is over. Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side will not finish with more points than Celtic no matter what happens over the final two league games. On top of that, the Hoops have a 20-goal advantage when it comes to goal difference as well.
Still, one would hope that the club seal it in style against Dundee United. Postecoglou decided to drop a selection surprise though, by leaving Jota, Kyogo and Daizen Maeda, all on the bench, giving a start to James Forrest instead. Liel Abada will be on the opposite flank. Celtic tweeted out the line up:
Forrest starts, while Jota, Maeda and Kyogo on bench for Celtic vs Dundee United
Once one of the most important and consistent players at the club, Forrest has not been regular feature in the Celtic first-team for a couple of years now.
The biggest reason behind that has been his series of injuries, which have resulted in him spending one spell on the sidelines after another. On the other hand, it also feels like the club have better options on the wings right now and even if Forrest regains full fitness, it is hard to see him re-establishing himself as a starter at Parkhead anytime in the near future.
Forrest has even been linked with a Celtic exit in recent times. It will be interesting to see how he does against Dundee United.
