Celtic mystery absence confirms summer transfer mistake

Celtic did a very good job when it comes to signing players in the summer. In fact, they did much better than anybody could have expected considering their record in recent years. Players like Kyogo, Jota, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Jota Hart, Liel Abada have grabbed the headlines and made an impact on the first-team. And it is the success of these signings that have directly led to the improvement that the Hoop have made.

That does not mean that Celtic have been perfect when it comes to making signings though. Not even close. There have been ‘project’ signings, like every year, which have not quite come off.

The signing of Liam Scales from Shamrock Rovers is starting to look like one such move. He has not been a regular part of Ange Postecoglou’s first-team plans for any part of this season even though he has made appearances here and there.

Scales has not even been part of the matchday squad since early February though and the last time that he featured in a Premiership game was back in January. And that is despite their lack of options at left-back.

Celtic appear to have made a summer transfer mistake by signing Scales

When Scales was signed by Celtic, eyebrows were raised. He had impressed while playing for Shamrock Rovers but questions were asked about whether he could make the jump to the Premiership.

Till now, he has not been able to do it and has barely featured for Celtic this season. And it is not like he is in the early stages of his career either. Scales is 23 years of age and needs to be playing much more regular football than he has done at Parkhead recently.

It is hard to see him getting into the playing XI on a consistent basis anytime soon and thus, a move away from Parkhead might lie in his future.

On the other hand, left-back remains a worry for Celtic. Greg Taylor has put in some good performances recently but he remains inconsistent and still does not feel like a starter for the Hoops. Let’s see if they make additions there in the summer.
