Celtic enjoyed a brilliant winter transfer window, bringing in Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi, Matt O’Riley and Johnny Kenny. And while the Rangers might have made a couple of significant additions on loan of their own, the Hoops must be delighted with how things went for themselves. One move that they could not pull off though was that of Australian international, Riley McGree.
At one point in the January transfer window, it had looked like it was only a matter of time before McGree completed a move to Celtic. But Middlesbrough are believed to have swooped in late on with a better transfer offer and the Australian ended up at the Championship club instead.
McGree has some history with Ange Postecoglou, as the manager had given him his first call up to the Australian national team, while he was still a teenager.
And McGree has confessed that he did have a call with Postecoglou regarding a potential move to Celtic. As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald, he said:
“Me and Ange did have a conversation.
“But as I said before, and the reasons why I gave before – that’s why I made the choice to go to Middlesbrough. At the end of the day, it’s my career, and I strongly believe I did what’s best for me.”
Celtic must be happy having signed O’Riley though
Celtic might have missed out on McGree, but they appear to have pulled off an impressive move for O’Riley instead.
O’Riley had been a standout in League One with MK Dons but there were some questions whether he could make the jump to Celtic. And while we are still very early on in his run at Parkhead, it is safe to say that he has made quite an impressive transition.
O’Riley has been immensely impressive in his first couple of appearances for Celtic, even providing an assist already. And it is safe to say that the Hoops should be happy to have signed him this January. If they have pulled off the move for McGree, it is very unlikely that they would have gone after the English midfielder as well. So things worked out quite well eventually.
