Initially, it had looked like Celtic had pulled off a transfer masterstroke when they signed Albian Ajeti for a transfer fee believed to be in the range of £4.5 million to £5 million. The initial rumours had suggested that he was set to join the Hoops on loan but surprisingly, it ended up being a permanent move. The Swiss international had not enjoyed a good spell at West Ham United but made a very bright start at Parkhead.
After scoring consistently in his first few appearances for Celtic, Ajeti would end up suffering an injury though and since then, he has never been able to rediscover that early goalscoring form that he had enjoyed for the Hoops.
According to stats from Transfermarkt, Ajeti has scored 9 goals in 48 appearances for Celtic till now. Those are not very impressive numbers for a striker.
It looks like a Parkhead transfer exit might not be out of the realms of possibility though. Arthur Cabral looks set to leave FC Basel before the end of the month. And as reported by Blick (via Daily Record), Ajeti is being considered as a replacement if a deal is rubber stamped.
Could Ajeti leave Celtic this month?
Ajeti has got quite a few chances to impress at Celtic through the course of his time at the club. But the Swiss striker has never quite been able to take those chances.
As a result, it looks very unlikely that he will become a regular for the club anytime soon, especially with the likes of Kyogo and Daizen Maeda at Parkhead, and Giorgos Giakoumakis also starting to show glimpses of what he can do, having scored in back-to-back games.
As a result, a Celtic exit might not be a bad idea for Ajeti at this point of time and FC Basel are a club where he has played some of his best football in the past.
