Liam Shaw had impressed during his time at Sheffield Wednesday and arrived at Celtic in the summer with a lot of expectations. Since then though, we have seen him struggle to make his mark in Ange Postecoglou’s first-team and it is understandable considering the players ahead of the youngster in the pecking order in the middle of the park as well as in defence. As a result, he was sent out on loan to Motherwell till the end of the season this month.
This is a good move for Shaw to say the least and hopefully, he will get playing time there to develop his game further and be ready to make an impact on Celtic’s senior side when he returns.
It was clear that there was very little scope for him to get a lot of chances at Celtic at this point of time. In fact, he had to wait until December to make his debut for the club, in their last Europa League group stage game of the campaign, against Real Betis.
Now, Shaw has revealed what Postecoglou told him before moving to Motherwell on loan. As reported by the Daily Record, the Celtic loanee said:
“I’m really looking forward to getting back out playing games.
“It was a joint decision. The Celtic gaffer told me I needed more games at this time in my career and I agreed.
“I need to be playing and getting experience in this league.
“No one likes not playing but I have developed in these last six months in training.
“Now I want to be on the pitch and hopefully I’ll do that here.
“The manager told me to come back next pre-season and hopefully I’ll be more involved.
“There are so many good players at Celtic, it’s hard to break through.
“But I’ll just keep my head down and keep working hard, so I go back ready to go.”
Shaw is currently on loan at Motherwell from Celtic
Still just 20 years of age, there is plenty of time on Shaw’s hands to develop his game further and reach a point where he can play regular football for Celtic.
We have seen players like Callum McGregor and Ryan Christie benefit from loan spells away from the club and go on to become first-team regulars at Parkhead upon returning. Hopefully, things will go as well for Shaw as well.
It will be very difficult for him to break into the midfield at Celtic in the future though with the club now having players like McGregor, Tom Rogic, David Turnbull, Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi, James McCarthy, Nir Bitton and Ismaila Soro in their ranks.
