Celtic could be handed surprise Leigh Griffiths blow

One of the first things that Celtic did during the Ange Postecoglou era was handing Leigh Griffiths a one-year contract extension. Back then, the move made sense. With Odsonne Edouard looking set to leave, many hoped that the Scottish striker would be able to rediscover his best form if he got a run in the first-team. But in hindsight, it was not a great move on the part of the Hoops, with the player currently on loan at Dundee FC.

And he has not enjoyed a great spell there either. According to stats from Transfermarkt, Griffiths has scored 2 goals in 14 appearances for Dundee FC.

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Griffiths could be sent back to Celtic with Dundee FC chiefs unimpressed by his contributions.

It is hard to see where he would fit into the current Celtic team though, with Kyogo firmly the main striker at Parkhead right now while Daizen Maeda has also arrived in January having topped the J1 League scoring charts in the 2021 season. We are also yet to see a lot of Giorgos Giakoumakis, who was the Eredivisie top scorer last season.

Griffiths could return to Celtic after failing to impress at Dundee FC on loan

There is no doubt that at the top of his game, Griffiths is a brilliant player. The problem is that he has not been at his best for a long time now, except for a brief spell in the second half of the 2019/20 season.

If Griffiths was to return to Parkhead, the club would most probably see if another club was interested in taking him on loan.

With his current deal running out next summer, it is hard to see him having a long-term future at Celtic even though he is still just 31 years of age and could have a lot of football left in the tank.
