Celtic’s biggest weakness right now is their lack of squad depth. And that has been further exposed in recent weeks, as a result of the number of injuries that the club have suffered this month. The fact that Ange Postecoglou brought on Liam Shaw, Josip Juranovic and Greg Taylor while chasing a goal against St Mirren, shows that the manager is scrambling for options right now.
The biggest area of problem at the moment is up front. At striker, Kyogo, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Albian Ajeti are all out. While on the wings, several players are struggling with injury problems as well.
Thus, the club are expected to add to their ranks in January. On the other hand, exits are only expected for players who have not made a mark in the first-team this season at all.
Could Johnston leave Celtic for Dundee United on loan for the rest of the season?
The rumour is surprising to say the least. Yes, it is true that Johnston has struggled to impress this season when he has been on the pitch.
That appears to be a direct result of a series of injuries stalling his development. When he had first broken through into the first-team picture, there was a lot of excitement around the youngster as he looked like a player who could make things happen. He has not shown that quality this season.
A loan move away for Johnston would make sense, but not under the current circumstances when several other wingers are out injured. Unless Celtic make more additions on the wings in the upcoming January transfer window, it would be very surprising to see him leave.
