Celtic appear to be heading towards a very important January transfer window. As we have already seen in December, Ange Postecoglou’s side have issues with their squad depth. Jota, Kyogo, Anthony Ralston, James Forrest and Albian Ajeti have all picked up injuries over the past few games, leaving the manager scrambling for options with some very important games coming up, including a League Cup final and a Glasgow Derby.
One area that Celtic need to make additions in is left-back. Since the departure of Kieran Tierney in the summer of 2019, nobody has been able to nail down that spot in the starting XI for an extended period of time.
And it looks like the Hoops might have their eyes on a Bundesliga star, who has been in tremendous form this season.
As reported by Sport Bild (via Sport Witness), Union Berlin’s Niko Gießelmann has emerged as a transfer target for Celtic. It is not clear though whether they want to sign him in January or next summer, when his current deal with the Bundesliga side runs out.
Celtic are interested in in-form Bundesliga star
Gießelmann has been a standout for Union Berlin this season. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 3 goals and provided 4 assists in 14 Bundesliga appearances.
Those are very impressive numbers for a left-back. Having spent the majority of his career in the second division, he has definitely found his form in the Bundesliga this season. And he could prove to be a solid addition at left-back for Celtic if he can keep performing like this.
At 30 years of age though, Gießelmann would not be a long-term signing. But if the Hoops can sign him on a free transfer next summer or for a small transfer fee in January, it could potentially be a solid move on their part, considering their problems at left-back.
