As has been the case often in recent times, Celtic could not hold on in Europe despite a brilliant start and ultimately ended up tasting defeat in a game that they were looking like winning for a long time. Jota’s goal had handed Ange Postecoglou’s side a 2-1 lead against Bayer Leverkusen, and with both luck and a brilliant Joe Hart on their side, it had looked like the Hoops were going to get a famous European win away in Germany.
That was not to be though. Ultimately, the conceded twice after the 80th minute mark, which resulted in a 3-2 defeat for the Hoops.
It also meant that Celtic’s chances of making it to the knockout phase of the Europa League were over, as Real Betis defeated Ferencvaros in the other game. The Hoops do have Europa Conference League football to look forward to though when the group stage comes to an end.
Kyogo sends brilliant message despite Celtic defeat vs Bayer Leverkusen
This is exactly the right kind of attitude to have about things moving forward. To be honest, Celtic were never favourites to make it out of their group, which was easily one of the toughest in this season’s competition.
To be honest, they did give a good account of themselves all things considered, beating Ferencvaros both home and away, and giving both Bayer Leverkusen and Real Betis runs for their money.
And while the manner of their defeat against the German side was disappointing, ultimately there are a lot of positives to take out from the game as well.
Celtic’s Europa League campaign might be over when the group stage comes to and end, but they have a lot of important games coming up in the future in other competitions, which they must be prepared for.
