Celtic had tried to bring back Fraser Forster from Southampton last season after he enjoyed a brilliant loan spell at Parkhead over the 2019/20 campaign. But it appeared that the English goalkeeper did not want to return to the club and instead wanted to fight for his place in the Premier League side’s starting XI.
About a year-and-a-half on and things have not quite worked out for Forster till now. At one point last season it had looked like he might get another run in the first-team but that faded away ultimately.
According to stats from Transfermarkt, Forster has made 3 appearances this season, all in the League Cup. And it looks like he could be on his way out of Southampton soon.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Forster’s contract expires at the end of the season and he is expected to leave, with a new goalkeeper arriving at Southampton.
Should Celtic consider another move for Forster in the future?
The news of him being most probably on his way out of Southampton should not come as a massive surprise considering the amount of football that he has played since returning from his loan spell at Celtic.
And one can almost expect rumours linking the Hoops with a potential move for Forster as a free agent at some point of time in the future. Now, the question is, does a move for Forster make sense at this point of time?
It most probably does not. Joe Hart arrived at Parkhead in the summer and has a tremendous job. Not only has he impressed with his performances but he has also established himself as a leader and is an important part of Ange Postecoglou’s side already. Yes, he might not be a long-term solution but neither would Forster be, who himself is set to turn 34 years of age.
