While the January transfer window is still over two months away, a lot of rumours are already building up surrounding Celtic. And one player that the Hoops have been linked with over the past couple of days is Yokohama F. Marinos superstar Daizen Maeda, who is currently the leading scorer in the J1 League and has already played under Ange Postecoglou.
Possessing incredible pace, great stamina, intelligent movement and the ability to finish with both feet, it is not hard to see why Celtic might be interested in signing Maeda. He looks like the perfect player for Postecoglou’s system.
According to stats from Transfermarkt, Maeda has scored 18 goals and provided 3 assists in 31 appearances in the J1 League this season. He also has experience of playing in Europe, having spent time with Portuguese club Maritimo.
Maeda himself appears to be aware of the Celtic rumours. As reported by The Scottish Sun, he said regarding the matter:
“I know about the reports, but my job is just to concentrate on playing and hopefully scoring goals for Yokohama.
“I am trying not to think too much about the speculation.”
Maeda can be the perfect signing for Postecoglou’s Celtic side
It is easy to see how Maeda would fit into this Celtic side. Up front, the club have struggled for options this season, with a number of players picking up injuries although things might be getting better now with Kyogo, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Mikey Johnston making their returns, thereby boosting Postecoglou’s options.
Someone like Maeda would add a lot of versatility to this team. He is capable of playing as a left winger, a centre forward and a second striker, and has shown already that he can score goals consistently even if not always playing as the focal point of the attack.
Also, he is still just 24 years of age and would be expected to get even better with experience. Celtic already pulled off a spectacular signing this season with Kyogo. Can they add a second Japanese superstar to their ranks in January?
