Celtic will be delighted to have come out with a 2-0 win against Ferencvaros to keep their hopes of qualifying for the knockout phase of this season’s Europa League alive. Going into the game, both teams had lost their opening two games in the competition and needed a win. A goal from Kyogo and an own goal from the Hungarian side handed all three points to Celtic on this occasion.
Things were pretty tight in the first-half with Celtic finding it difficult to break down a solid Ferencvaros team. But as the game wore on, things opened up more and the Hoops got going.
It was a brilliant Jota pass from deep in his own half that opened up the Ferencvaros defence in the second half as Kyogo slotted it home. Then a scrappy own goal late on put the game to bed.
“We were under a lot of pressure in the second half and in some situations our defense was inadequate. Just like against Zalaegerszeg over the weekend, we thought we could get away with the little mistakes, no.
“We were quite good from the front to the first goal and maybe the result was disappointing, but we had the opportunities. As for the second goal, however, I can also say that we cannot afford that.”
Celtic ultimately enjoyed a comfortable win against Ferencvaros
Yes, things were very tight in the first half but once they opened up, Celtic ultimately ended up enjoying a fairly comfortable win.
In fact, they could have easily scored more than the two goals that they did. One has to remember that Callum McGregor missed a penalty as well.
Now, though, they have to make sure that they get a positive result against Ferencvaros in the away game as well and then, they could be well and truly back in the mix when it comes to qualifying for the knockout phase of the competition.
This result should be a huge confidence booster for Postecoglou’s side who are now on a three-game winning streak. It is important that they continue building on this new found momentum though. Their next game will be against St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership.
